Antwerp lies around 55 miles (88 kilometers) from the North Sea, on the Schelde (Scheldt) River. The Schelde, along with the Meuse and the Rhine, comprises Western Europe's largest estuary, and Antwerp is an integral part of a massive harbour complex, one of the world's largest. Antwerp's waterfront infrastructure expanded significantly following World War II. For many years, this expansion was limited to Schelde's right bank, but beginning in the 1970s, the left bank saw significant growth as well.
Antwerp serves as the unofficial capital of Flanders because it is located in the Dutch-speaking (Flemish-speaking) region of Belgium. Antwerpians, conscious as they are, take this duty very seriously.
